Celebrating throughout December

Making the most of December, I started out celebrating with a visit to my Mom's.

We pulled out all her decorations & decorated her tree. We put it in the hallway outside her apartment so she could share it with others. She also has a small round table next to her door that she keeps decorated for what ever holiday it is - at Christmas time, she sets her musical snowmen out that plays a ton of Christmas songs. It gives the place a festive feeling that everyone seems to enjoy.

I went with her to play Bingo this time. Her friend Helen is the caller.

They play two cards at a time - 10 games of regular Bingo & then one Blackout game.

Mom won an early game & won 55 cents.

But I won the Blackout game...$5 bucks...Merry Christmas to me! I get my photography skills from my Mom. :)

Later that week, while in San Jose, I got a quick visit with some dear friends at "Tanya's craft thing"...Kelly happened to be in town & it was so fun to see them both.

December also means the Office Christmas party. This year we went to Paolo's in downtown San Jose. I didn't think of taking a picture until we were ready to leave, so Grandma & Grandpa aren't in this because they left earlier, but here we are with Lucy & Ed, Brent & Danxia, Sylvia & her daughter Delfina.

We continued our celebration in the Pacific Northwest with our favorite Holyoaks. Macy & Penelope helped me with my Christmas letters...

We made some crafts, played games, & made goodies...(The smudge you see on Jill's face is actually from my buttery hands - I got butter on the lens of my camera.)

Of course, we got pretty silly...

We took the ferry over to Seattle for the day - it was cold, but very sunny.

Some of us played cards...

Some of us ate snacks to try & keep the nausea away...

Jill is still not feeling her best, but she was a good sport to suffer through it with us.

We headed over to see the Gingerbread House display at the Sheraton Hotel. We stood in a really long line & my pictures did NOT turn out very well, but it was fun to see the different displays. Grandpa kept Roman busy...

We decided NOT to brave the long long line to see the Zoo Lights, so we went to Ben & Jerry's instead...good choice!

They had a special visitor come by, too! Macy was staring at Santa & seemed to recognize a familiar twinkle in his eyes...

After he left, Penelope tried to get a glimpse of his sleigh but she wasn't fast enough.

It was fun to share a little holiday spirit with the Holyoaks. We miss them already - they are so warm & cuddly, it was hard to say goodbye.

You may not know this, but I know Santa personally...in fact, sometimes he lets me go on a few early home visits with him to check out who's naughty & nice.

We have been visiting these families for a long time...some as long as 15 years! We love our Parkview Ward friends & have loved watching them grow...

The Macias Family - Jessi, Lisa & Hunter, MJ & Tanner

The Stepan Family - Wendy & Brooklyn, Matt, Kent, Joe, Sam & Jeffrey

The Van Tuyl Family - Amber, Sara, Allison, Matt, Lilly & Mike

The Summers Family - Scott (behind the camera), Tanya (at a meeting, but she is in the photo posted earlier), the twins, Stephen, Emily, & Eric

The Barlow Family - Rob, Lynette, Justin, Evan, Lindsey, Dallin, & Mahalie (So bummed I didn't get a picture! How did that happen? Maybe I can talk them into sending me one?)

What's a celebration without a little Christmas Sushi with Ty & Christi? We've had fun hangin' out with them going to dinner, & the movies.

Here it is, already Christmas Eve. We are headed to see da boyz tonight & the Middletons tomorrow after Church. It is kinda weird not having little ones around the house anymore. Sometimes we miss those days when our kids were little, but we do our best to make the rounds & we find joy knowing that they are celebrating our Savior's birth with the traditions & memories that they are building with their families, our grandchildren.

We hope you are celebrating with those you love, too. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

Just a copy of our annual Christmas letter for posterity...

2011 was Wet 'n Wild!

The Mid-Carts came together this summer for some wet 'n wild family fun - not just in our own back yard for our annual family reunion, but our long awaited Grand Canyon permit to raft the Colorado River finally arrived so, we took 3 generations of River Rats on the trip; Paul & Jenny; Rochelle, Brent, & Trevor; Ben & Dara; Kyle & Adia; Leah & Rick; Nicole; Ty & Christi; Cousin Troy; & our rafting mentor, Blaine. It was a fantastic experience to share this 14 day trip with so many of our children & our two oldest grandchildren. We are officially 44 members strong…welcoming Jude Ty Horner to the family in April. We will be adding two more babies next summer, thanks to Jill & Gina.

In a nutshell...

* Jenny started the year out with a nasty cough that concerned us, but after 3 rounds of antibiotics, a chest xray, & a ct scan, it was determined that she had a "severe cough." It finally went away in March.
* Went to Seattle to play with the Holyoaks - took the ferry over to the Pacific Science Center - great place! You could spend days in there with all the exhibits & hands on activities. We had a special tea party with the girls for our anniversary, too.
* Had a great time at Disneyland & Universal Studios with Ben & Dara - we love spending time with our kids.
* Spent some time in Utah getting to know our newest grandson, Jude Ty Horner, & playing with his big sister, Olivia. We celebrated Easter, got to participate in Jude's Blessing, & even spent some time with the Bassetts. Thanksgiving Point is gorgeous during their Tulip Festival!
* The following week most of the girls joined us for BYU Women's Conference - Jenny loves this event. It fills her cup with hope & gratitude for the gospel of Jesus Christ. She especially loves sharing it with our girls.
* Ty & Christi came to stay with us this summer. We really enjoyed having them here & getting to know Christi a little better. We started their summer with a trip to Disneyland & Universal Studios.
* Paul's siblings joined us at the Riverhouse for his Dad's 80th birthday. Paul's sister, Laura & her husband Eric, put together a wonderful tribute in the form of a newspaper with contributions from the entire Middleton family. We had a great time celebrating together. None of us realized that would be the last time we saw Laura, she passed away in August.
* Traveled to Peru & Ecuador. Hiked all around Macchu Pichu & several Inca ruins. Jenny loved all the alpacas roaming the streets & the colorful traditional costumes that the locals wore...FABULOUS experience! Then we boarded a boat & cruised around the Galapagos Islands & explored the natural splendor with all its exotic critters. Paul was like a little boy, he was so fascinated by the unique wildlife - truly amazing!
* Had a great 4th of July celebration with Rochelle's family, Gina's family, Kyle's family, Nicole, Ty & Christi - flag raising, parade, great BBQ, & crazy fun games with the family.
* Set out on a two week outdoor adventure rafting the Grand Canyon with 6 of our children, 4 of their spouses, 2 grandchildren, 1 nephew, & our rafting guru, Blaine. It brought back great memories for those of us who went way back in 1994 & we made some new memories on this trip. It was a record high water year (26,000 CFS) which made for some incredible white water fun. Brent decided the white water wasn't exciting enough & flipped a boat in Lava Falls, dumping himself, Rochelle, Trevor, & Ben into the rip-roarin' rapids. Everyone survived with a great story to tell - they even got it on video!
* Our annual family reunion was a blast, tagging onto our River trip, we enjoyed more Wet 'n Wild fun. We tie-dyed t-shirts (as you can see by our group photo), beat the heat at the Folsom Aquatic Center, floating & rafting the American River, playing on the waterslide & tons of water games! The grandkids entertained us with their version of the Haka & the Hukilau - they had a blast & we have some intense performers.
* Headed to the coast for Jenny's Mom's family reunion. Good food & good company visiting our Cowell cousins.
* Spent a weekend with Paul's family remembering his sister, Laura, who passed away August 18th. We went to San Francisco ( a Middleton family tradition) & later had a celebration of her life with her husband, Eric. We were touched to meet so many people who have known & worked with Laura who came to pay respects & support Eric.
* Paul had a meeting in Southern California, so Jenny joined him there & they went to Disneyland ALL BY THEMSELVES! It was a great date & they got to visit Gina's family for a few days on the way home. Extra treat.
* Joined Leah's family at Disneyland for the girls' first trip. LOVE the excitement of the little princesses when they experience Disney's magic for the first time! Those little girls are thrill seekers like their dad, they loved all the rides & roller coasters.
* State Farm Convention in Vegas with Rochelle & Brent, Kyle & Amy. Two Cirque du Soleil shows, the Legends of Las Vegas, & Don Henley of the Eagles...great convention!
* Took Paul's parents to Kauai with Paul's sister Linda & her husband Rex. We packed in some fun - touring the island, a helicopter ride, lots of great food (especially the shaved ice), 4 wheeling in some ATVs, paddle boarding, & a luau.
* Visited Cindi's family in Mesa - always fun to visit the kids in their own environment. They were tons of fun.
* Finishing December with a trip to Seattle to see Jill's family. Spending Christmas at the River with Ty & Christi, then off to celebrate the New Year with Leah & Terri & their families.

Paul, paulmiddleton10@gmail.com, feels blessed to have a job he loves & a team that he enjoys working with. Like many of you, we've had to make adjustments in this down economy, but Paul is working hard to keep things positive as he looks for ways to grow the business. He works hard maintaining the property & has turned into a great landscaper...who knew he had such talents? Still serving as 2nd Counselor in the bishopric, he enjoys our ward & helping out as needed. We pester Paul's parents quite a bit when we are in San Jose. We feel fortunate to live so close to them.

Jenny, jennymiddleton@email.com, stays busy with Relief Society (still 1st Counselor), visiting kids, visiting her mom, and trying to keep up with Paul. She is excited to finally have completed her Personal Progress this year (a goal setting program for the young women in our Church). She took her time & put a lot of effort into it - it was very rewarding & she learned a lot about herself through the process.

Counting our blessings...

Pre-Thanksgiving

Rochelle & da boyz had the whole week off of school for Thanksgiving break so since they were scheduled to go to Brent's sisters's on Thanksgiving Day, they came to play with us for a couple of days & spend some time with T at the River for a little PRE-Thanksgiving celebration - it was gorgeous California autumn weather & the trees were hanging on to that last bit of vibrant color...

Olivia was delighted to have "kids" to play with & da boyz were very good to her, especially Carson.

They climbed on the water feature...

Played bocce ball & other things...

Painted some handprint turkeys (I got the idea from Alana - she made them in Kindergarten)...

Aunt Nicole joined in on the fun, too...

The next day we dug in the dirt...

Cleaned out my garden...

Had our own little Turkey Bowl...

Painted some more...

Liv helped make dessert...

Had a delicious "smoked" turkey thanks to G'pa's mad skills...

Hung out in the hot tub...

Thanksgiving -

Even though the Petersens had to leave us, Ben flew in & Kyle's family came to spend the night. They brought more fun with them on Thanksgiving Day.

Amy brought all the supplies needed for the kids to make these fun little edible turkeys...

Everyone pitched in to get dinner ready...

Avery made name tags for the place settings...I think ours were exceptional!

Kyle insists he started this family tradition - a layer of turkey covered with a mashed potatoe volcano filled with peas & smothered in gravy....

Amy slipped "thankful for" notes from family who couldn't be there under each plate for us to read during dinner. As we went around the table to express gratitude for specific blessings, we celebrated with loved ones far & near...CHEERS! Matinelli's sparkling cider is a delicious way to celebrate.

Nicole & Adia jumped on the clean up...

Of course we played games...

Kenyon & Jude were checkin out the Black Friday Ads...

Post-Thanksgiving -

Terri & I were too pooped from our recent Car-cation to join all the crazy people Black Friday shopping, but Nicole & Kyle got up EARLY & met Rochelle out in all the madness. Terri & Ben did go out to lunch & catch a movie - meanwhile, Paul & I enjoyed another relaxing day at the River with the kids - it was another beautiful day...

Kenyon challenged me to a hoola-hoop contest...booyah! who's your g'ma?

Later that night we busted out the Christmas decor & got started decking the halls...

Olivia had some very strong opinions as to where things should go...

I was able to convince her otherwise...

She was super excited to welcome a special guest!

I heard some great advice the other day, "It's not enough to count your blessings - you need to make your blessings count."

We hope your Thanksgiving was fabulous.
