Pioneer Day

July 24 is Pioneer Day—a Utah state holiday celebrated with parades, fireworks, picnics, and other festivities. However, Saints in other places also celebrate the arrival of the pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley.  You can find out more about California Pioneers HERE.

This year's Pioneer Day started out HOT & ended even HOTTER!  It was brutal!  We hung out around the house trying to stay cool because we planned on attending our Stake Pioneer Day Picnic at Henningsen/Lotus Park that evening, just around the corner.

Terri & Cindi did the girls hair all fancy in these cute little braided crowns - they looked adorable!.  Liv & Macy even wore the same shirt..."twinners!"  They all gathered around Aunt Terri & were asking her questions about the "baby in her belly."  Evidently he was pretty active so she showed them what her tummy looked like when he moved & let them put their little hands on her tummy so they could actually feel him move.  They were so facinated!

That evening at the park, it was difficult to find some shade, but we managed to find some...we were all melting!

Climbing on G'pa is always a favorite activity...

Leah & family drove in from Utah just in time for dinner! YAY!  I love how Pip is leaning on Aunt Leah trying to make herself comfortable in the heat!

Sitting in the heat was not Terri's idea of having fun...being 7 months pregnant did not help!  Her look says it all...

We headed straight for the Snow Cone line when we got there...the most popular place at the event!

Such a great way to cool off in the summer heat!

Jude couldn't decide if he liked his snow cone or mine.  He would take a bite of his, then take a bite of mine, then his, then mine...you get the picture...

Cotton Candy was also popular with the kids...they were a sticky hot mess!

There were tons of activities...I didn't even make it around to see what all they had!  Face Painting is always popular with the kids...

Lots of crafts & pioneer games...

Wait a minute...I didn't know Pioneers had donuts!?

...OR SLIP N SLIDES??? (I'm sure glad they packed these & carried them across the plains!)  ;)

These kids were still going strong after their long drive!

Cooper just chillin with some ice...

The local Mormon Battalion brought out their cannon & shared a little Pioneer History with everyone.  We all plugged our ears as they showed us all how it worked...

Then some wanna-bes brought out the Candy Cannon & shot candy into the air for all the kids...total chaos!

Our area is rich in Mormon history & I love that we celebrate our Pioneer Heritage!

"Let us never forget the faith of our fathers and the selfless sacrifice of our mothers, those pioneering Saints who set such an inspiring example of obedience. Let us remember them as we strive to be valiant servants in our work to ‘invite all to come unto Christ’."  by Joseph B. Wirthlin
