Mormon Helping Hands

Our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, sponsors a "Day of Community Service" (formerly known as "Mormon Helping Hands").  We have changed the name to a "Day of Community Service" because now we are working with more than just members of our church...we are working with various community service organizations, churches, civic groups & other community partners to come together to help restore & beautify California.  However, it's not just a California thing, it happens all over the USA & other countries as well!

This year our ward was assigned to clear a piece of property for Habitat for Humanity.  Here's the crew who we started with - we ended up with 35 volunteers & a total of 103 service hours...

Members of all ages came out & got a little dirty as we cleared the area - some of us with trimmers...

...some of us with weed whackers (that's Paul on the right)...

...some of us with chain saws...

We removed old signs & fencing & other items people "dumped" on this vacant lot...

Some people busted up concrete...

...while others loaded it up into the bins...

We hauled the brush & debris into another bin...

Some of us made sure we packed it down so we could fit more in...

In just a few hours, we had the lot cleared & ready for Habitat for Humanity...

Mother Teresa said, "Not all of us can do great things.  But we can do small things with great love."

Ghandi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."

The scriptures tell us, “When you are in the service of your fellow beings you are only in the service of your God.” (Mosiah 2:17)
